The research in brief

Across seven AI platforms asked one standardized question about rate-and-term refinancing for existing homeowners, Rocket Mortgage is the consensus leader: it was named by 6 of 7 platforms (85.7% share) at an average listed position of 3.5. CrossCountry Mortgage (5 mentions, 71.4%, average 3.0) and Truist (5 mentions, 71.4%, average 5.6) are the strongest alternatives for borrowers who want broad government-loan menus or relationship pricing, while Navy Federal Credit Union is the standout for VA-eligible military borrowers and Better.com for fee-averse digital borrowers. The study covered 7 platforms, 22 unique entities were named, and 10 qualified by being named on at least two platforms. The principal limitation: this is platform-reported market intelligence from a single prompt per platform, not independent customer reviews or verified pricing, and company-owned citations materially outnumber independent ones.

1. Rocket Mortgage

Questions explored

  • Is Rocket Mortgage worth it for rate-and-term refinancing, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance lender should a buyer choose if they want a fast digital process and broad loan-type coverage?

Rocket Mortgage is the consensus leader of this index, named by 6 of 7 platforms at an average listed position of 3.5. Platform fit ratings were mostly "good," with Kimi alone rating it "mixed." The verdict across platforms is consistent: strong digital execution, broad mainstream loan categories, and above-average servicing satisfaction, but no verified evidence that it is the cheapest option for any given borrower.

Why it ranked here. Rocket was the only entity named by six platforms, giving it the highest platform share (85.7%) in the study. Its average listed position of 3.5 was second-best among the top three, and its best position was 2. No platform placed it lower than 5.

Best suited for. Borrowers who value an online application and digital document workflow, homeowners seeking conventional, FHA, VA, or jumbo rate-and-term options subject to eligibility, and borrowers who prioritize established servicing and customer-service infrastructure [179].

Main strengths for the use case. Rocket explicitly describes rate-and-term refinancing as replacing the existing mortgage without taking cash out [44]. Published refinance examples include 20-year and 30-year fixed terms plus FHA, VA, and jumbo categories [175]. J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Mortgage Servicer Satisfaction Study ranked Rocket first among eligible ranked servicers with a score of 685 versus a study average of 596 [355]. Deepseek noted multiple term options including 10-, 15-, 20-, and 30-year fixed loans [184].

Main limitations. Public rate examples are time-sensitive and point-dependent; the cited examples were dated May 28, 2026 and included substantial points, so they do not establish market-leading pricing [175]. Anthropic reported Rocket's rates typically run 0.125–0.375% higher than independent brokers or local credit unions [397]. Kimi cited a 2024 average refinance rate of 7.33% versus competitor Rate's 6.37%, average origination fees of $4,580, and lender credits of only $254 [350].

2. CrossCountry Mortgage

Questions explored

  • Is CrossCountry Mortgage worth it for rate-and-term refinancing, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance lender should a buyer choose if they need FHA, VA, or USDA program coverage?

CrossCountry Mortgage ranked second with 5 platform mentions (71.4%) and the best average listed position in the top three at 3.0. Fit ratings were split: Grok rated it "good," while ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Gemini, and Perplexity rated it "mixed" and Kimi rated it "uncertain."

Why it ranked here. Five platforms named it, and its average position of 3.0 was the strongest among all qualifying entities. Its best position was 2. The mixed fit ratings reflect thin independent verification of pricing rather than any platform disputing its product relevance.

Best suited for. Homeowners seeking a broad menu of conventional and government-backed refinance options, borrowers who value local loan officers and personalized guidance, and borrowers with FHA, VA, USDA, self-employed, or other profiles requiring program-specific underwriting [29].

Main strengths for the use case. CrossCountry lists conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, jumbo, fixed-rate, and adjustable-rate refinance options [24]. It targets 21-day closings for standard loans and as few as 10 days for FastTrack preapproved applicants [241]. It does not charge a rate-lock fee [258]. Money's 2026 review of 35+ refinance lenders named it "Best Overall" for rate-and-term refinancing, citing a 500 minimum credit score and 21-day closings [237]. Google reported over 700 branches across all 50 states [396].

Main limitations. Anthropic reported origination fees averaging $4,522 versus a $2,792 national average [258], and HMDA-based data indicating rates generally higher than competitors [258]. CrossCountry does not publish rates or fees online [229]. Customer-service evidence is polarized: Zillow shows 4.97/5 from 23,000+ reviews [396], while Finder reported 1.33/5 from 98 reviews and Trustpilot 2/5 from 17 reviews [339]. Deepseek found no authoritative public source itemizing rate-and-term closing costs [361].

Pricing or cost summary. Refinance costs are generally stated at 2%–6% of the loan amount [20].

3. Truist

Questions explored

  • Is Truist worth it for rate-and-term refinancing, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance lender should an existing bank customer choose if relationship rate discounts matter?

Truist ranked third with 5 platform mentions (71.4%) but the widest rank dispersion in the index: it received a best position of 1 from two platforms and a worst position of 10 from another, producing an average of 5.6.

Why it ranked here. Five platforms named it, but they disagreed sharply on placement. Openai and Grok placed it first; DeepSeek placed it tenth. The high average reflects that dispersion rather than consistent mid-tier placement.

Best suited for. Borrowers who value access to a local loan professional or branch-based assistance, existing Truist customers who may qualify for relationship-based rate discounts, and borrowers needing conventional, FHA, VA, jumbo, or fixed-rate refinance options [208].

Main strengths for the use case. Truist offers rate locks up to 90 days, with lock-in terms in 7-, 15-, 30-, 45-, 60-, and 75-day increments and float-down options on longer locks [213]. Relationship rate discounts start at 0.25% for $100,000 in combined balances and rise to 0.75% at higher tiers [69]. A $500 lender credit on refinance loans was cited [346]. FFIEC data showed 2024 average total closing costs of $5,795 versus a $6,861 competitor average [360]. Truist states it does not charge prepayment penalties [315].

Main limitations. Rate competitiveness is contested: Bankrate reported rates below national average [303], while SmartAsset described them as "in line with Wells Fargo" and "fairly high" [255]. Truist does not disclose refinance rates or APRs online [255]. J.D. Power's 2025 servicer study listed Truist at 588 versus a 596 average [355]. Mortgages are unavailable in Alaska, Arizona, and Hawaii [303]. CFPB received 328 mortgage complaints in 2024, mostly payment-process related [244].

Pricing or cost summary. Application fees of $595–$1,250 based on loan amount were cited; origination fees are not publicly disclosed [315].

4. Navy Federal Credit Union

Read the full Navy Federal Credit Union fit review for supporting evidence and buying considerations.

Navy Federal ranked fourth with 4 platform mentions (57.1%) and an average listed position of 5.0, including a best position of 1 from Perplexity. Its defining constraint is membership eligibility.

Why it ranked here. Four platforms named it. Perplexity placed it first; Kimi placed it tenth. The spread reflects that its strongest features apply only to a restricted eligible population.

Best suited for. Eligible borrowers refinancing an existing VA mortgage through a VA IRRRL, military-affiliated borrowers who value specialized eligibility and servicing, and borrowers seeking conventional 15- or 30-year fixed refinancing including higher-LTV options subject to approval [137].

Main strengths for the use case. Navy Federal advertises a VA IRRRL up to 100% LTV for eligible VA borrowers [140]. It publishes a no-cost 60-day rate-lock option with a maximum 0.250% rate deduction, and a 90-day no-cost-lock option carrying a 0.125% loan-amount fee [148]. Google reported a No-Refi Rate Drop feature allowing a rate reduction after six consecutive on-time payments for a flat $250 fee, a No-Cost Freedom Lock with up to two float-downs totaling 0.25%, and no PMI on conventional loans [142]. A Guaranteed Rate Match policy offers to match a lower locked rate or pay $1,000 [147].

Main limitations. Membership is restricted to servicemembers, veterans, Department of Defense personnel and contractors, and qualifying family or household members [146]. A 1% mortgage origination fee applies unless the borrower accepts a 0.25 percentage-point rate increase [137]. Advertised rates include discount points [137]. Grok reported rates 0.75% higher for refinances from non-Navy Federal lenders [137]. Navy Federal does not offer FHA or USDA refinancing [297]. Kimi found no verified 2026 rate or fee data for objective comparison [130]. .

5. SoFi

Questions explored

  • Is SoFi worth it for rate-and-term refinancing, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance lender should a buyer choose if they want published origination-fee discounts and digital processing?

SoFi ranked fifth with 4 platform mentions (57.1%) and an average listed position of 5.25. Its best position was 4 — the highest "best position" floor among the top five, meaning no platform placed it in the top three.

Why it ranked here. Four platforms named it, but none ranked it higher than fourth. Its profile is consistent: competitive digital experience and published fee structure, with unresolved questions about service speed and rate leadership.

Best suited for. Creditworthy homeowners seeking a conventional rate-and-term refinance through an online lender, borrowers who value digital application tools and may qualify for SoFi member or banking-related origination-fee discounts, and homeowners evaluating shorter or longer fixed-rate terms [191].

Main strengths for the use case. SoFi publishes a standard $1,495 origination fee with a one-time $500 member discount and an additional one-time $500 discount for qualifying SoFi Plus, direct-deposit, or deposit customers [191]. Anthropic reported SoFi posted the most aggressive rate tier among major competitors as of May 2026, edging competition by roughly 0.15 percentage points [248]. Fixed-rate terms of 10, 15, 20, and 30 years were cited [254]. A Lock and Look program allows a 91-day rate lock at preapproval with one-time free float-down if rates drop at least 25 basis points [345]. A $10,000 on-time closing guarantee applies if a SoFi-caused delay occurs [345].

Main limitations. SoFi states it does not currently offer no-closing-cost refinancing [195]. Refinancing is unavailable in New York, where SoFi offers purchase-only mortgages [345]. Minimum loan amount is $75,000 and minimum equity is 5% [190]. Multiple 2026 customer reviews reported 3+ week delays between application and loan officer contact [322]. Customer service hours were cited as 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. PT Monday through Friday [254]. Deepseek flagged that advertised rates are assumptions-based examples, not quotable borrower rates [204]. .

6. Chase

Questions explored

  • Is Chase worth it for rate-and-term refinancing, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance lender should a buyer choose if they want relationship pricing and informal rate matching?

Chase ranked sixth with 4 platform mentions (57.1%) and an average listed position of 7.0 — the lowest average among the top six. Its best position was 5.

Why it ranked here. Four platforms named it, but none placed it above fifth. Its strengths are concentrated in relationship pricing and servicing scale; its weaknesses center on fee transparency and reported processing friction.

Best suited for. Existing Chase customers who value an established national lender and integrated mortgage servicing, borrowers with strong credit and adequate equity, and homeowners seeking to lower the rate, change the term, or evaluate fixed-rate and ARM alternatives.

Main strengths for the use case. Chase offers relationship pricing discounts of 0.05% to 1.00% depending on assets held or transferred into Chase or J.P. Morgan accounts [62]. Google reported that Chase loan advisors routinely evaluate and match documented mortgage rate offers from other lenders, though this is not a formal nationwide guarantee [280]. NerdWallet reported above-average J.D. Power origination satisfaction (771/1000 vs. 760 average) and servicing satisfaction (650/1000 vs. 596 average) in 2025 [370]. Zillow showed 4.96/5 from more than 8,900 reviews [370]. Rate locks generally run 30 to 90 days [86].

Main limitations. Chase does not post exact standard origination or lender fees on its public website [271]. NerdWallet and federal data characterize Chase origination fees as on the higher side [370]. Rate locks cannot be completed entirely online and require a Home Lending Advisor [274]. Expired locks may incur extension fees reported at $300–$800 [275]. Trustpilot rated Chase banking 1.3/5 from 3,000+ reviews, and CFPB received 549 mortgage-related complaints in 2025 [240]. Multiple customer reviews cited months-long delays and repeated document requests [317]. Chase does not disclose home-equity minimums [312]. .

7. Rate

Questions explored

  • Is Rate worth it for rate-and-term refinancing, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance lender should a buyer choose if they want fast closing and a digital application?

Rate ranked seventh despite holding the best average listed position in the entire index at 1.0 — every platform that named it placed it first. It qualified with only 3 platform mentions (42.9%), which is why it sits below entities with more mentions.

Why it ranked here. The ranking rule prioritizes platform mentions before average position. Rate's perfect 1.0 average and best position of 1 could not overcome its lower mention count of 3.

Best suited for. Borrowers who value an online application combined with access to loan officers, homeowners comparing conventional, FHA, or VA rate-and-term scenarios, and borrowers who want to evaluate a shorter term, a fixed-rate conversion, or a lower payment through one lender [160].

Main strengths for the use case. Kimi cited a 2024 average refinance rate of 6.37%, among the lowest in Investopedia's measured data set of 16 lenders, with a 10-day advertised closing time and average origination fees of $2,845 against average lender credits of $2,156 [350]. Google reported a Same Day Mortgage program promising loan approval within one business day and potential clear-to-close in as little as 10 days [72]. An EnTitled pilot uses automated analysis to waive lender's title insurance for eligible primary-residence refinances, saving $500–$2,500, though it is restricted to 23 states [56]. A Lock 'N' Roll program allows 60-, 75-, or 90-day locks with float-down renegotiation [66].

Main limitations. Anthropic documented a case where a customer was not informed of a $2,400 rate lock extension fee until one day before closing [393]. Rate does not itemize lender fees upfront; its calculator suggests approximately $2,000 on most loans [299]. J.D. Power 2025 mortgage origination satisfaction was below average [372]. Deepseek noted CFPB complaint data for Guaranteed Rate (now Rate) includes issues related to fees, closing costs, and loan-estimate disclosures [329].

8. New American Funding

Questions explored

  • Is New American Funding worth it for rate-and-term refinancing, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance lender should a self-employed borrower choose if they need manual underwriting?

New American Funding ranked eighth with 3 platform mentions (42.9%) and an average listed position of 3.67 — the second-best average among all qualifying entities. Its best position was 3.

Why it ranked here. Only three platforms named it, but those that did placed it relatively high. The ranking rule's mention-first ordering placed it below entities with four or more mentions.

Best suited for. Borrowers who want a large direct lender with refinance capability, conventional and government-loan coverage, branch and phone support, and an online application or loan-management portal; borrowers with nonstandard qualification needs; and self-employed homeowners refinancing with manual underwriting requirements [374].

Main strengths for the use case. New American Funding offers loan terms ranging from 8 to 30 years [383]. Its 5-Year Rate Protection Pledge waives lender fees up to a $1,629 maximum and covers appraisal cost up to $500 on a qualifying future refinance [153]. It services approximately 80% of eligible loans [149]. It is licensed in all 50 states with over 300 branch locations [343]. Product breadth includes conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, jumbo, non-QM, and interest-only options [42]. Google cited the I CAN Mortgage allowing customized fixed-rate terms between 8 and 30 years [270].

Main limitations. Anthropic reported advertised rates require paying 3.0 discount points upfront [261], and that rates tend to run higher than average [259]. New American Funding does not publish refinance rates online [261] and does not list lender fees on its website [261]. J.D. Power's 2025 origination study rated it below average, though its servicer study rated it above average [243]. CFPB received 128 mortgage-related complaints in 2025 about parent company Broker Solutions [243]. A 2022 CFPB consent order concerning mortgage servicing and escrow practices was cited [331].

9. Better.com

Questions explored

  • Is Better.com worth it for rate-and-term refinancing, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance lender should a buyer choose if they want no lender origination fees and a fully digital process?

Better.com ranked ninth with 3 platform mentions (42.9%) and an average listed position of 5.0, including a best position of 1 from Gemini. Its profile is the most polarized in the index on service quality.

Why it ranked here. Three platforms named it. Google placed it first; DeepSeek placed it ninth. The average of 5.0 reflects that split.

Best suited for. Existing homeowners with a conventional primary-residence mortgage who prefer a digital application and self-service document workflow, borrowers comparing 15-, 20-, and 30-year fixed-rate refinance scenarios, and borrowers who prioritize avoiding lender origination, application, underwriting, and loan-officer commission fees [3].

Main strengths for the use case. Better states it does not charge lender fees including loan-officer commissions, lender origination fees, application fees, or underwriting fees [7]. It advertises locking a refinance rate in as little as 15 minutes for borrowers meeting specific conditions, or 30 minutes more broadly [17]. Fixed-rate terms include 15-, 20-, and 30-year options, with a separate FAQ listing 10-year conventional fixed-rate loans [14]. It states it does not originate loans with prepayment penalties [10]. Google cited a rate-match guarantee to match competitors' rates and fees or pay a $100 concession [53]. Average total loan costs were cited at $6,411 in 2024 [282].

Main limitations. The 15-minute rate-lock claim requires completing all tasks, no co-borrower on file, W-2 income, a conventional primary residence, and specified property-ownership conditions [17]. Better operates with no physical branches [239]. Anthropic reported documented communication clarity issues including misleading closing-cost disclosures and unclear explanations of points and cash-to-close [308]. CFPB received 22 complaints in 2025, with 17 timely responses and all closed with explanations [239].

10. loanDepot

Questions explored

  • Is loanDepot worth it for rate-and-term refinancing, and what are its main drawbacks?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance lender should an existing borrower choose if they want lender fees waived on a future refinance?

loanDepot ranked tenth with 3 platform mentions (42.9%) and an average listed position of 5.33, including a best position of 3 from Kimi.

Why it ranked here. Three platforms named it. Its distinguishing feature — the Lifetime Guarantee — applies only to existing loanDepot borrowers, which limits its relevance to the general rate-and-term buyer.

Best suited for. Homeowners who value a large national lender and a primarily digital refinance process, existing loanDepot borrowers who may qualify for the Lifetime Guarantee on future lender fees, and borrowers considering conventional, FHA, VA, or other eligible refinance programs who want both 15- and 30-year term comparisons [124].

Main strengths for the use case. The Lifetime Guarantee waives lender fees on eligible future refinances of a qualifying loanDepot-originated loan secured by the same property, subject to conditions and exclusions [114]. Fixed-rate terms of 10, 15, 20, and 30 years are offered, plus ARM refinance options [252]. A 150-day rate lock option was introduced, with typical locks of 15–45 days [386]. All loanDepot lending officers are SAFE Act licensed and bound by an internal "no steering" policy [105]. A GEICO partnership provides up to $1,000 off closing costs for eligible policyholders [347]. J.D. Power's 2025 servicer satisfaction study rated loanDepot higher than average [235].

Main limitations. loanDepot does not publish rates online, requiring contact or application for quotes [373]. J.D. Power's 2025 origination satisfaction study rated it below average [230]. Forbes Advisor reported refinance rates significantly higher than competitors and cited a 7.00% 30-year refinance snapshot during the review period [344]. Origination/lender fees range 0.5%–1.0% of the loan amount [349]. Some reviewers reported excessive sales calls after preapproval [235].

What this study reveals

Questions explored

  • What do AI platforms collectively reveal about the rate-and-term refinance market in 2026?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance features do AI platforms most consistently flag as decision-critical?

Three patterns dominate the cross-platform evidence.

First, no lender is described as both cheapest and best-serviced. Every qualifying entity carries at least one platform-reported pricing limitation. Rocket Mortgage, the consensus leader, was described by Claude as carrying a 0.125–0.375% rate premium [397]. Rate, which every naming platform placed first, was named by only three platforms. CrossCountry, with the best average position among the top three, was rated "mixed" or "uncertain" by six of seven platforms.

Second, rate transparency is the most common structural weakness. CrossCountry does not publish rates or fees online [229]. Truist does not disclose refinance rates or APRs online [255]. Chase does not post exact standard origination or lender fees [271]. New American Funding does not publish refinance rates online [261]. loanDepot does not publish rates online [373].

Where the AI Platforms Agreed

Questions explored

  • On which rate-and-term refinance lenders do AI platforms most agree?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance features do all AI platforms treat as important?

Agreement was strongest on four points.

Rocket Mortgage's product fit. Six platforms named it and none placed it below fifth. All seven fit assessments described it as at least a "good" fit except Kimi's "mixed." Its digital workflow, broad loan-type coverage, and servicing satisfaction were cited positively across ChatGPT, Claude, DeepSeek, Grok, Perplexity, and Gemini.

The 2%–6% closing-cost band. Every entity with a cited range fell within or adjacent to this band, and multiple platforms cited CFPB guidance that "no-cost" structures shift costs into a higher rate or larger balance rather than eliminating them [400].

Rate-lock conditionality. Platforms consistently noted that locked rates can change if application information changes or the loan does not close within the lock period [399]. .

Where the AI Platforms Disagreed

Questions explored

  • Where do AI platforms disagree most about rate-and-term refinance lenders?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance lender has the most contested customer-satisfaction evidence?

Disagreement was material and should not be smoothed into false consensus.

Truist's rate competitiveness. Bankrate reported Truist rates below national average [303]; SmartAsset described them as "in line with Wells Fargo" and "fairly high" [255]; Grok cited NerdWallet naming Truist best overall for refinancing in 2026 with low rates and fees, while Forbes reported higher-than-average rates and poor transparency [346]. Truist also received the widest rank dispersion in the index, from first to tenth.

Chase's customer satisfaction. Chase claims a J.D. Power 2026 #1 ranking for customer satisfaction and problem resolution [94], while Trustpilot rated Chase banking 1.3/5 from 3,000+ reviews [240]. NerdWallet reported above-average J.D. Power scores [370], while ConsumerAffairs documented multi-month delays and lost rate locks [317]. .

How to compare your options

Questions explored

  • What should a buyer check before choosing a mortgage refinance lender for rate-and-term refinancing?
  • Which rate-and-term refinance lender should a buyer choose if they need to compare total cost across multiple quotes?

The evidence supports a five-step process.

Step 1: Confirm the transaction is coded as rate-and-term, not cash-out. Navy Federal distinguishes cash-out refinancing based on use of proceeds [139], and Rate distinguishes rate-and-term from cash-out [163]. Confirm the new principal is limited to the existing payoff plus eligible refinance costs.

Step 2: Obtain Loan Estimates from at least three lenders using identical assumptions. CFPB guidance cited across bundles recommends comparing Loan Estimates including origination charges and other lender-controlled costs [401]. Use the same loan amount, term, points, lock period, and loan type.

Step 3: Verify the rate-lock terms in writing. Confirm lock duration, expiration date and time, extension fee, relock rules, and float-down availability.

Methodology

This index was produced from a single standardized prompt sent once to each of seven AI platforms on 2026-09-29. The prompt described a homeowner who has had their current mortgage for a few years and wants to lower their interest rate or change their loan term from 30 years to 15 years without taking cash out, and asked which providers the platform would recommend and why.

Platforms included (7): ChatGPT (gpt-5.6-luna, native search), Claude (claude-haiku-4-5-20251001, native search), DeepSeek (deepseek-v4-flash, no search enabled), Grok (x-ai/grok-4.3, server tool search), Perplexity (perplexity/sonar, native options), Kimi (moonshotai/kimi-k2.6, web plugin), and Gemini (gemini-3.5-flash, native search).

Ranking rule. Entities were ordered by platform mentions first, then by average listed position, then by best listed rank. The supplied final ranking table is used without recalculation.

Eligibility rule. An entity qualified if it was named by at least two platforms during ranking discovery. Twenty-two unique entities were named; ten qualified.

Evidence handling. Each qualifying entity received a fit assessment from the platforms that evaluated it.

Research limitations

Several limitations materially affect how this index should be used.

Single prompt, single pass. One standardized prompt was sent once to each platform. AI answers can vary by date, wording, location, account state, model, interface, browsing configuration, and the sources retrieved. A different prompt or a different day could produce a different ranking.

Platform-reported dates differ from the run date. The authoritative study date is 2026-09-29. Platform-reported research dates ranged from 2026-01-15 (DeepSeek, New American Funding) to 2026-09-29. These are provenance metadata and do not independently prove freshness.

Company-owned citations outnumber independent ones. Across the ten entity bundles, owned sources materially outnumber independent sources. Company claims should not be described as independently verified.

No-search model claims require verification. Deepseek ran without search enabled. Its claims are model-reported and require explicit verification before being treated as current facts.

URLs were not independently validated. The supplied URLs were collected from platform responses and were not independently validated by the writer stage.

Official-site retrieval failed for several entities. Official-site retrieval failed or returned unverified excerpts for Rocket Mortgage, SoFi, New American Funding, and others.

The consensus assessment

Rocket Mortgage is the consensus leader of this 7-platform index for rate-and-term refinancing, named by 6 of 7 platforms at an average listed position of 3.5. Its advantages are digital execution, broad mainstream loan-type coverage, and independently supported servicing satisfaction. Its principal weakness is that no platform verified it as the cheapest option, and multiple platforms reported a rate premium versus brokers or credit unions.

CrossCountry Mortgage and Truist are the strongest alternatives for distinct buyer needs: CrossCountry for broad government-loan menus and local loan-officer access, Truist for existing bank customers who can capture relationship pricing. Navy Federal Credit Union is the clear specialist for VA-eligible military borrowers. Better.com is the strongest fit for fee-averse conventional borrowers who want a fully digital process, provided they accept the documented service-quality tradeoffs.

Rate holds the best average listed position in the index at 1.0 but qualified with only three platform mentions, which placed it seventh under the mention-first ranking rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rate-and-term refinance? A rate-and-term refinance replaces an existing mortgage with a new loan that changes the interest rate, the loan term, or both, without borrowing additional money. Rocket describes it as replacing the existing mortgage without taking cash out [44], and Rate distinguishes it from cash-out refinancing [163].

Which lender ranked first in this study? Rocket Mortgage ranked first, named by 6 of 7 platforms (85.7% share) at an average listed position of 3.5.

Why did Rate rank seventh despite a perfect 1.0 average position? The ranking rule prioritizes platform mentions before average position. Rate was named by only three platforms, while entities ranked above it were named by four or more.

Do any of these lenders publish refinance rates online? Several do not. CrossCountry [229], Truist [255], Chase [271], New American Funding [261], and loanDepot [373] were all described as not publishing complete refinance pricing online. .

Study limitations

  • Recommendation counts measure mentions during the ranking stage. Later fit assessments do not increase those counts.
  • Some evidence identifiers refer to individual platform responses rather than independently verified sources.
  • Source URLs came from AI platform responses and were not independently validated during report preparation.
